Fantasy Sports Locker Room takes a closer look at last night’s Fantasy Baseball News and Notes from around the majors – Twitter style.
The King is coming for that CG category… if he can get a run, that is. @GarionThorne
— Patrick Mayo (@ThePME) June 8, 2014
Close! But, my oh my, Felix Hernandez you are good at what you do…
#Mariners Felix Hernandez has 15 strikeouts, a career high and the 21st 15+ strikeout game in team history. — MLB Play Index (@BRefPlayIndex) June 8, 2014
Felix Hernandez with the fewest pitches in a 15+ strikeout game since at least 1988 — Jeff Sullivan (@based_ball) June 8, 2014
Hernandez allowed four hits over seven shutout innings, walking only one while striking out 15! Of course, he was denied a win, but the King just keeps on rolling with a 106/17 K/BB ratio over 98.0 innings.
Felix Hernandez has been worth 0.9 more pitching WAR than the Mets and Pirates combined — Jeff Sullivan (@based_ball) June 8, 2014
A fine game from Jordan Zimmermann too!
Jordan Zimmermann pitched a CG SHO with 12 K & 2 H. No pitcher in Washington #Nationals history ever had more K and fewer H in SHO. — MLB Play Index (@BRefPlayIndex) June 9, 2014
Jordan Zimmermann: 8th pitcher in modern era (since 1900) with a road shutout allowing 2 or fewer hits, with 12 K, 0 BB (via @EliasSports ) — ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) June 9, 2014
There was recently a window to try to buy low on Jordan Zimmermann in fantasy leagues. Safe to say that has passed. — D.J. Short (@djshort) June 8, 2014
Clayton Kershaw fanned nine over five innings before the game was called due to rain. He allowed three hits and an earned run in the win. Hernandez, Zimmermann and Kershaw were only three of many pitchers who brought it last night.
My pitching on all my teams has been phenomenal today, but I’m a little bummed I sat Jaime Garcia. Oh well, it was the right move — Seth Klein (@SethDaSportsMan) June 8, 2014
Jaime Garcia just issued his first walk of the season. Entered today’s start with 22 Ks, 0 BB in 24 2/3 IP — Chris Toman (@Chris_Toman) June 8, 2014
Drew Hutchison has been excellent for the Jays this year, but he’s already beyond his prior career high for ML innings in a season. — Jon Morosi (@jonmorosi) June 8, 2014
Jaime Garcia was rocked for six runs on eight hits in his last start, but bounced back nicely with seven shutout innings against the Jays. He allowed three hits, three walks (his first three of the season) and struck out four. Seth Klien, you are not the only one to sit Garcia. I missed on a nice line as well. 19 percent owned in Yahoo! leagues. He has potential to get in a grove. No grove for Drew Hutchison at the Rogers Centre, at least not a good one. The Cardinals roughed him up for five runs on six hits in only three innings bringing his ERA to 8.86 in five starts in Toronto. He has a sparkling 2.03 ERA in eight outings on the road.
Chase Anderson exits, now with a 6-2 lead. His final line: 7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB and a career-high 8 K. #Dbacks — Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) June 8, 2014
Pitcher of record @ChaseAnderson87 poised to be third starter since 1998 to win first 5 starts.Angels’ Weaver (7) and Dodgers Ishii (6). 6-2 — Jack Magruder (@JackMagruder) June 8, 2014
If you don’t buy into Chase Anderson (and only six percent of Yahoo! has), I guess the true test will be against the Dodgers later this week. Anderson is, what I like to call – feelin’ it!
Buy Low on Homer Bailey feels like make-believe advice. He’s been good in six of last seven. I don’t see anyone selling cheaply. — scott pianowski (@scott_pianowski) June 8, 2014
Yovani Gallardo pitched like an ace today — Joe Block (@joe_block) June 8, 2014
Homer Bailey allowed only one run and struck out seven on route to his fourth straight win. He’s won five of six and has surrendered three runs or fewer in seven of his last eight starts. Yovani Gallardo disappeared after a good April and has been brutal ever since, but last night he owned the Pirates spinning seven shutout innings allowing only four hits. He struck out eight and had to be that good because Jeff Locke was fantastic in his spot start.
Jeff Locke the first Pirates starter to go a full 7.0 innings since Charlie Morton did so in GM 1 of the DH at the Yankees…on May 18. — Dan Zangrilli (@DanZangrilli) June 8, 2014
If you want a silver lining, Jeff Locke‘s 7 IP was first #Pirates pitcher to go 7 since Gerrit Cole went 8 IP on May 7. It’s been a month! — Matt Maisel (@Matt_Maisel) June 8, 2014
And with Gerrit Cole now on the 15-day DL with a tired shoulder, the Pirates could use all the help they can get. Locke gave up one run on three hits and struck out five over seven innings. We can’t expect too many outings like that, but we did see a stretch of solid baseball in the first half last season. Maybe he can come close to that form.
BIG PAPI! David Ortiz hits CLUTCH 3-run HR off Joba Chamberlain in 9th, and Red Sox take 5-3 lead vs Tigers. — SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) June 9, 2014
We’ve seen this before… Big Papi with a big blast and a Tigers pitcher giving it up in the late innings.
In the ninth innings of games: the Tigers have pitched 50 2/3 innings, and allowed 46 runs. — Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN) June 9, 2014
I think if the World Series goes only 8 innings every game @tigers have shot. If not….well. — Chris Rose (@ChrisRose) June 9, 2014
John Lackey was and has been solid.
John Lackey‘s night: 8 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 K, 1 BB. ERA stands at 3.18. — Brian MacPherson (@brianmacp) June 9, 2014
Scott Kazmir too…He definitely didn’t need this much run support, but he got it.
Scott Kazmir improves to 7-2 on 4 RBIs each from John Jaso, Brandon Moss. #Athletics 11, #Orioles 1. — John Hickey (@JHickey3) June 8, 2014
This is the 4th time in 13 starts #Athletics LHP Scott Kazmir has started the game with at least five consecutive scoreless innings. — John Hickey (@JHickey3) June 8, 2014
Try telling that to Brandon Moss, this guy just does not care. He has been chalking up runs for a long time now.
In 150 games with the Pirates in 2009-10, Brandon Moss had 7 HR and 43 RBI. This year with the A’s, in 61 games, he has 16 HR and 53 RBI. — High Heat Stats MLB (@HighHeatStats) June 8, 2014
Over his last 107 games, #Athletics Brandon Moss has as many RBI as games started (91). — MLB Play Index (@BRefPlayIndex) June 8, 2014
A grand slam from Brandon Moss, 1 of 3 on the night.
6/8/2014: Career-first grand slams by Chris Carter & Jon Singleton key #Astros‘ 14-5 road romp over Twins. George Springer adds solo shot. — Astros Daily (@AstrosDaily) June 9, 2014
Oh my, Jon Singleton. Anything that travels that far should require a passport — jasoncollette (@jasoncollette) June 8, 2014
And a shoutout to Curtis Granderson who hit two home runs. The Yankees could really use a couple home runs couldn’t they?
15th career multi-homer game for Curtis Granderson. First since 10/3/12 with Yankees vs Boston — Adam Rubin (@AdamRubinESPN) June 8, 2014
Billy Hamilton has more home runs than Bryce Harper. — Steve Finkelstein (@sports4steve) June 8, 2014
To be fair Harper has been hurt, but Billy Hamilton now has two home runs. Two more than most of us thought he would get.
INJURIES
Tigers say left hamstring tightness for Miguel Cabrera, and he’s day to day… Left the game for a pinch-runner in the bottom of the 6th. — Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN) June 9, 2014
I mentioned Cole on the DL. No saying if Miguel Cabrera will land there, certainly Fantasy Baseball owners can’t afford that kind of loss.
